The Industry’s Focus on Veteran Hiring Continues

Stemming from the collective desire of cable and media entertainment companies to take a systematic, industry-level approach to the hiring and retention of military veterans, Mission Media was launched in September 2015. Most recently, Mission Media hosted a collaborative exhibit booth at the Student Veterans of America National Conference on January 4-6, 2018. The conference attracted over 2,000 of the best and brightest veteran scholars who have chosen to use higher education to transition to a career and civilian life. Mission Media’s booth highlighted careers in the media entertainment and cable industry with a specific focus on the participating companies: A&E, Comcast, Charter Communications, CTHRA, NCTA, SCTE, The Walt Disney Company, Viacom, Vyve Broadband and WICT.

Booth activity was high and resulted in 80 students completing a job interest survey. CTHRA would like to thank the individuals who volunteered to greet student veterans in the booth: Will Baas and Jenn Hagwood of Comcast, Steve Harris of SCTE, Colt Lewis of Charter Communications, Kevin Preston from The Walt Disney Company, and Tasha Ross of Viacom.

Another industry effort to support veterans is WICT’s introduction of the Martha Soehren Women Veterans Fellowship which will provide career development and advancement for high-potential female veterans in cable. The one-year award includes a WICT membership as well as a scholarship to the WICT Leadership Conference and other programs, including travel stipends. Fellowship application forms can be found on WICT’s website.  Soehren is the Immediate Past Chair of the WICT Global board and the Chief Talent Development Officer and SVP at Comcast University and Comcast Cable.
